Bangkok and Phuket are 860 km (535 miles) apart. The flight takes 1 hour 20 minutes and costs as little as THB 800 ($22) on budget airlines β making it one of the best-value short-haul routes in Southeast Asia.
Pick the right option for your budget, schedule, and travel style.
| Mode | Travel Time | Avg Cost | Route | Best For | Booking Tip |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| βPlane | ~1 hr 20 min | THB 800β3,000 ($22β$85) one way | Don Mueang (DMK) or Suvarnabhumi (BKK) β Phuket (HKT) | Speed, value, convenience | AirAsia and Nok Air depart from Don Mueang (DMK) β cheaper airport to reach from central Bangkok. Book 2β4 weeks ahead for best fares. |
| πBus | ~12β14 hours | THB 400β800 ($11β$22) one way | Bangkok Southern Bus Terminal (Sai Tai Mai) β Phuket Bus Terminal | Budget travel, overnight option | VIP overnight buses include reclining seats and meals. Departures mostly at night β arrive in Phuket by morning and save a hotel night. |

Take the overnight train to Surat Thani or Phang Nga, then a connecting bus. Book train tickets at 12go.asia. |
| πCar | ~9β10 hours | THB 2,500β4,000 in fuel (varies) | Bangkok β Highway 4 South β Sarasin Bridge β Phuket | Road trips, groups, flexibility | Drive Highway 4 south through Chumphon and Ranong. Consider stopping in Khao Lak for a night to break the journey. |
Flying is the clear winner. Budget carriers like AirAsia, Nok Air, and Thai Lion Air run the BangkokβPhuket route multiple times daily from Don Mueang Airport (DMK), with fares regularly under THB 1,000 ($28) one way when booked in advance. The flight takes 1 hour 20 minutes. For a journey of 860 km, the bus canβt compete on time, and the train doesnβt run all the way to the island. Fly, and spend the extra hours on the beach.

BangkokβPhuket is one of the most competitive short-haul routes in Southeast Asia, served by multiple budget and full-service carriers daily. Don Mueang (DMK) is the hub for budget airlines β AirAsia, Nok Air, and Thai Lion Air all depart from here. Suvarnabhumi (BKK) handles Bangkok Airways and Thai Airways flights. Phuket Airport (HKT) is in the north of the island, about 30β45 minutes by taxi to most west-coast beaches.
Don Mueang (DMK) is 25 km north of central Bangkok β budget extra time to get there, especially in traffic. The Don Mueang Tollway from Mo Chit takes 30β45 minutes outside rush hour.
Phuket is Thailandβs largest island and its most visited province, sitting in the Andaman Sea off the west coast of the Malay Peninsula. It is connected to the mainland by two bridges over the Sarasin Channel β technically an island but in practice easily driveable from the north. The island covers 543 square kilometres, and the difference between its various beaches and districts is significant enough that where you stay shapes your entire experience of it. How far is Phuket from me?
The west coast holds the famous beaches: Patong is the busiest and most commercial, with a nightlife strip along Bangla Road that runs all night; Kata and Karon immediately south are calmer and better for families; Kamala and Surin further north attract a wealthier crowd with beach clubs and long-stay villa rentals. The north of the island, around Mai Khao, has the quietest stretches of sand and is where most of the luxury resorts sit, close enough to the airport that you donβt need to cross the whole island. The east coast is largely mangrove and fishing villages β less photogenic but genuinely Thai.
Old Phuket Town, the islandβs historic commercial centre inland from the east coast, is the part most visitors miss and arguably the best part of Phuket proper. The old town is built in Sino-Portuguese style β a distinctive architectural blend that arrived with Chinese traders in the 19th century during the tin-mining boom. Shophouses painted in soft blues and yellows line streets that have barely changed in 100 years. Talang Road and Thalang Road have the best concentration of colonial-era buildings, independent cafΓ©s, and street food stalls.
Phuketβs real draw for many visitors is what surrounds it rather than the island itself. Phang Nga Bay, 40 kilometres to the northeast, is one of the most dramatic seascapes in Southeast Asia β limestone karsts rising vertically from flat green water, with the cave-riddled Ko Tapu (βJames Bond Islandβ) made famous by The Man with the Golden Gun. The Phi Phi Islands, 48 kilometres to the southeast, are reachable by speedboat in 45 minutes or ferry in 2 hours. Ko Phi Phi Don has accommodation and bars; Ko Phi Phi Leh is the uninhabited island with Maya Bay, made famous by βThe Beach.β Both are day-trip standards from Phuket.
The best time to visit is November through April, when the southwest monsoon has passed and the Andaman side is calm and clear. May through October brings heavy rain and rough seas β some beach clubs close, most boats to the outer islands stop running, and a few resorts drop prices sharply. The east coast (Koh Samui side) has the opposite weather pattern, making Samui a viable alternative during Phuketβs wet season. If youβre planning a diving or snorkelling trip, the water visibility is at its best from December through April, when you can see 20β30 metres on good days around Shark Point and Anemone Reef.

Phuket has no reliable public transit. Songthaews (shared pickup trucks) run fixed routes cheaply but slowly. Grab (the Thai equivalent of Uber) is the most convenient and transparent-priced option for getting between beaches and the airport. Many visitors rent scooters for local exploring β international driving licence required.
Grab is the dominant ride-hailing app in Thailand and the most reliable way to get around Phuket without negotiating fares. It covers airport pickups, inter-beach transfers, and Old Town trips. Download and set up before you land.
Songthaews are converted pickup trucks that run fixed routes between Phuket Town and the main west-coast beaches for THB 30β50. Theyβre slow and infrequent but very cheap. Useful for the Phuket Town β Patong or Phuket Town β Kata routes.
